DanicaDanica Sue Patrick is an American former professional racing driver. She is the most successful female in American open-wheel car racing time. Her victory at the Indy Japan 300 was her first win. She dropped out of high school with her parents' permission in 1998, and moved to the United Kingdom to further her career. Patrick took part in Formula Vauxhall and Formula Ford before returning to the United States in 2001 due to a lack of funding. She competed in five Barber Dodge Pro Series races in 2002 for Rahal Letterman Racing. Patrick raced in the Toyota Atlantic Series the following two years. Her best effort was when she finished third in championship standings for the 2004 season when she became the first female to take a pole in the series.She began racing in the IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Racing in 2005. She scored three pole positions, equaling Tomas's record of three poles during her rookie season. She was awarded the 2005 IndyCar Series Rookie of Year. She showed improvement throughout the following two seasons with Rahal Letterman Racing 2006, and later Andretti Green Racing 2007. Patrick was ranked sixth overall in drivers standings in 2008 following her Japan victory. The following year, she was able to improve on her performance and was fifth overall in the drivers' standings. Patrick also scored an all-time high of third at the Indianapolis 500, which was the most impressive performance by a female driver in the race. Patrick's overall performance was bad in 2010, but she scored two second-place finishes at oval tracks prior to leaving IndyCar to focus on stock car racing.
